When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe extolled the virtues of beer in his famous drinking song back in the 18th century, he may well have been describing his favourite beer – “Schwarzbier”, or “black beer”. Today this type of beer is known only to connoisseurs, although it was widely drunk before the introduction of Pilsner brewing method {pale lagers}.

I have chosen to name my website after this type of beer because it is one of my favourites. Although few beer drinkers nowadays are familiar with it, it is gradually gaining in popularity once more. right

If we translate the German compound word “Schwarzbier” literally somewhat unconventionally into English, we arrive at the term “blackbeer”, which of course does not exist in this form. In the British Isles, dark beers are known as ale, porter or stout. These beers are top-fermented, unlike the light beers, which are bottom-fermented and which are the only ones known as “beer”. left
